Sonia's Many Friends

As of September, El Limon resident Sonia Presinal is back on health insurance while she awaits her kidney transplant! The call could come at any moment, or not for many months. In the meantime, we need to raise $ 550 a month for copayments, transportation, and other essential expenses for the dialysis that keeps Sonia alive. Please keep those donations coming, we're almost there !

CAREL: Building Innovative Models for Rural Development

Over the last ten years, the Rural Alternatives Center of El Limon (CAREL) has been helping Dominican villagers create their own future by facilitating access to apropriate technologies, within the framework of a participatory, community-oriented, hands-on methodology. CAREL has become a national leader in providing technical support for innovative village-based projects, particularly micro-hydroelectric mini-grids and wireless internet access. Much of this support has been delivered on-site, on a project-by-project basis. Now, as the demand for CAREL’s assistance increases, CAREL is re-focusing on creating a unique educational center in its base community of El Limon, San Jose de Ocoa, Dominican Republic. The facility will be structured on a university-like model, providing courses, workshops, and extension services, but will be directed to immediate rural needs, be run by and for rural residents, and operate in an actual village environment.
